Calstock May Revels and the Calstock Giant 2 May bank holiday Monday

The Calstock Giant

May Revels

Some of you may have heard us tell you about our unique Calstock Giant. Forget the Floral Dance and all the other commercial Cornish festivals – May Revels is the one! A truly genteel and magical evening where no one makes a penny – except the pub, of course.  The whole event is based on the Legend of Tamara and Tavy.  Starting just before the mighty Calstock Viaduct, the Calstock Giant leads a procession of local people who come and join him as he processes through the town. The Giant knocks on the bedrooms windows to get everyone to come out to play. And play they do – music including pots and pans and anything else that might be used to send out a beat.

Wave Goodbye for Another Year

Finally, he boards his ship and sails off down the his river, the Tamar. It really is a truly magical event and the weather even looks good, given it’s a bank holiday!

A Great Cornish Shout

Then we all end up in the Tamar Inn for a great Cornish Shout, the like would be hard to find anywhere else in Cornwall.

To see the full legend of Tamara and Tavy please see our Calendar Event post.
